10 Signs Your Nervous System Is Stuck in Survival Mode (and How to Reset)

What is survival mode?

Ever feel like your foot is permanently on the gas pedal yet you’re wired and weirdly exhausted? That’s survival mode. When we face danger, our bodies shift into fight, flight or freeze, flooding the system with stress hormones like cortisol. This is a beautiful, protective response in a crisis, but chronic stress can leave your nervous system stuck in a constant state of alert. You might feel anxious, disconnected and burnt out even when life seems calm. I know this feeling intimately. Many of my clients show up in my virtual office saying, “I don’t understand why I can’t relax.”

Signs your nervous system is dysregulated

  1. Persistent anxiety or worry – Feeling on edge or restless most of the time may indicate your body is stuck in fight‑or‑flight.
  2. Sleep problems and fatigue – Elevated cortisol can make it hard to fall asleep; alternatively, chronic stress may cause burnout and exhaustion.
  3. Physical symptoms – Tension headaches, digestive issues, muscle pain or rapid heartbeat are common signs your nervous system is overstimulated.
  4. Emotional numbness or overreaction – Survival mode can make it difficult to regulate emotions, leading to emotional shutdown or outbursts.
  5. Difficulty concentrating or brain fog – Dysregulation affects cognitive function, making it hard to focus or remember things.
  6. Hypervigilance or irritability – Feeling constantly on guard or easily startled is a hallmark of survival mode.
  7. Social withdrawal – When your nervous system prioritizes survival, connecting with others may feel draining. You may isolate yourself or feel uneasy in social situations.
  8. Feeling disconnected from your body – Many people report feeling “checked out” or dissociated when their nervous system is overwhelmed.
  9. Chronic pain or illness – Long‑term stress can weaken the immune system and contribute to inflammatory conditions.
  10. Sense of hopelessness – Feeling stuck or believing that things will never improve may be a sign that your nervous system needs support.

How to reset your nervous system

  1. Grounding techniques – Engage your senses to bring attention back to the present. Try the “5‑4‑3‑2‑1” exercise: notice five things you can see, four you can touch, three you can hear, two you can smell and one you can taste.
  2. Movement – Physical activity releases tension and balances stress hormones. Yoga, walking or dancing can help your body shift out of survival mode.
  3. Prioritize restorative sleep – Develop a consistent bedtime routine and create a calming sleep environment. Relaxation techniques like progressive muscle relaxation can help you unwind.
  4. Practice mindfulness or meditation – Deep breathing, body scans and mindfulness practices activate the parasympathetic nervous system and lower cortisol levels.
  5. Social support – Talking with a trusted friend, family member or therapist helps regulate your nervous system and fosters a sense of safety.
  6. Establish routines – A predictable daily structure reassures your nervous system and reduces uncertainty.
  7. Eat nourishing foods – A balanced diet stabilizes blood sugar and hormones, supporting mental and physical health.
  8. Seek professional help – If you’ve been stuck in survival mode for a long time or symptoms are severe, a trauma‑informed therapist can guide you through EMDR, IFS or somatic therapies to regulate your nervous system.
